Do I need to wear ballet shoes for practice?
I am not in ballet due to the fact I have gotten to old to start being 15. I do own a few at home dvd’s I was going to use for my sister but she was enrolled in a school instead. Now I want to use them just to get a good work out since I have tried Zumba but I am not that type of person. I like the more disciplined moves and the grace of it. I own no type of ballet equipment and was wondering if I could just wear my socks while doing the simple dvd’s at home. Nothing big just a simple workout each day. I would wear the normal workout clothes as well.
Trying to learn ballet at home is a colossal waste of time. First off you need a sprung or floating floor so you wont get injured. Second, you need corrections from a ballet teacher. It is so easy to do things incorrectly that you think you are doing correctly. All of ballet comes from your turnout and if you are not engaging the correct muscles deep within your hips and pelvic floor but instead turnout from your knees and ankles, you will damage your knees and build bad habits that will be hard to break.
Who says you are too old to start ballet? You can start in a teen beginner ballet class. You may be too old to become a professional dancer, but recreational ballet is for anyone of any age. Even adults who have never had a ballet class before can go to adult beginner classes. Google teen or teen/adult ballet classes in your area and get started in the right way. Most likely you can take a trial class in your socks.
